I am looking for the best solution (both cost and space) for a supply to handle a 4V to 40V input with a 12V 1A output.

It appears the SEPIC or Positive Buck-Boost are the alternatives. I have not been able to locate a reference design or eval board for such a beast. I can't be the only one looking for such a solution.

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
